8.   Halloween - An Irish Tradition

Most people think that St. Patrick's day is the most widely celebrated Irish holiday in the world.  Apparently its the second largest!  A little unknown fact is that Halloween has its origins with the Irish, Scottish and Breton (British) celts.  Irish immigrants made the holiday popular when they arrived in America after the famine in the 1840's.  Leave it to the Irish and Scots to come up with a holiday that scares the living hell out of you.  There is a one hour long documentary devoted to this subject on the history channel (which I have seen).  Check out the link below.  Spooky!  Just one more piece to the board of Ireland as a cultural superpower!  The more you know :)

6.  Clan na NGael Ladies Make Ladies Football Final
Our ladies team put up a valiant effort in this year's north american championships in San Francisco this past labor day weekend.  The team made it to the final having drawn at full time in the semi-final.  With 3 points down and against the wind the Atlanta women somehow managed to defeat San Diego and progress.  A seasoned San Fran team beat the girls in the second half of final.  The teams were level at half time but San Francisco pulled away towards the end.  Well done ladies - you made Atlanta proud.  Next year we'll win it.  I'd like to personally thank Cathi Duggar for her long-term commitment to the team.  Cathi is threatening to retire and I believe she means it this time.  Also, a special thanks also to Kieran Cronin who coached the girls this year.

7.  Congratulations
Camogie coach Kevin Quinn recently got engaged to ladies hurling team Joy Peterson.  Kevin recently represented the club at the East Atlanta Strut Festival and has been recruiting heavily for ladies hurling and has done an excellent job at getting ladies hurling going in Atlanta.  Joy has been a stalwart of ladies hurling.  Congratulations to them both!

11.  Mark McGovern Support Fund
Mark McGovern is a Fermanagh footballer from the Belcoo O'Rahilly's club who suffered a severe (and apparently unneccessary) head injury on the 25 th June during a Gaelic match for the UlsterGAA Club in San Francisco. After five weeks in a coma in the San Francisco General Hospital, he has came through a liver complaint, the MRSA super bug and a bout of pneumonia. These conditions were considered life threatening, but thanks to his incredible resolve and the professional skills of the staff at SF General, Mark battled through and has recently started an intensive course of rehabilitation.
A fund has been set up in order for him to pay his medical bills.  Mark McGovern Support Fund online at https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/markmcgovernsupportfund or directly to the Mark McGovern Support Fund Bank Account at Bank of Ireland in Main Street, Lisnaskea Sort Code 90-50-53 AccountNo. 85880288 all cheques payable to Mark McGovern Support Fund.  Mark's family and club would like to thank everyone for their continued support and we ask that you continue to keep Mark and his family in your thoughts over the coming weeks.  (He has since been released from hospital and is expected to make a full recovery; however he still needs help with his bills.  A suspect has been charged in the incident).

Coed Open Football and Hurling Clinic and Matches Starting March 6

Atlanta Gaelic clubs NaFianna and Clan Na Gael are hosting a 4-5 game series of Football and Hurling open to club members as well as unaffiliated players of any skill level. You may play either or both sports.

For beginning players: Learn more about Gaelic football (soccer/rugby-ish) and Hurling (field hockey/lacrosse-ish) by attending a clinic explaining rules and play of each game, including skills practice. If you like the sport(s) you can go on to participate in a 4 game series at a moderately competitive level. You will be able to play with and learn from more experienced players without the pressure of regional, non-recreational competition. This is an excellent opportunity for beginners to learn in a structured environment without long-term commitment.

For Club players: A great way to shake off the dust and play in organized, refereed games before the competitive season begins.

Dues: $25/one sport, $40 for both. The clinic is free and if you would like to participate in the games, dues must be paid no later than immediately following the clinic (we need as much time as possible to complete the player roster and build the teams). The fees for the Coed Inter-team matches are outside of club dues and proceeds will be split equally between clubs (NaFianna and Clan Na Gael).

Clinic and games will be held Sundays with the time and location to follow shortly. Please see schedule below for dates. Note: there are no games Easter Sunday or Memorial Day weekend.

2009 Clan na Gael News

Clan na Gael Hurlers Return to Winning Ways

Clan na Gael’s traveling hurling team defeated Charlotte on Saturday, December 5 with a fine display of hurling.

The game was played in Charlotte and was sweet revenge for the Atlanta side that suffered a defeat at the hands of Charlotte in last year's hurling dual.  Atlanta started well with three goals in the first ten minutes. Charlotte steadied after that and scored three quick goals towards the end of the first half.  The score was 3-6 to 3-2 at half time; just a 4 point lead to the Gaels.

Clan na Gael came out to the second half on a mission.  Fine marksmanship from James Noonan, Kevin Quinn, Morgan Darcy and Rob Kiely put 6 points up on the board in the first six minutes of the second half. It was a great display of hurling in the second half, especially from newcomer and former Galway senior goalkeeper Morgan Darcy who cleaned up all loose ball around him.

Thanks to Kevin Devin and Barry Given for having us in Charlotte.

MVP – James Noonan

Full Time Score:

Atlanta Clan na Gael 5-16

Charlotte 3-6

Fall League 2009 Results

November 2, 2009

Congratulations to Team Ray Henry on a great victory in the deciding game of the Fall 2009 League. In a cracker of a game played at full speed and full passion for 60 minutes they emerged the deserving victors.

The game is best summed up by player, Johnny O'Sullivan:

"Wow, 30 people. It was a legendary game to be honest. There were hardly any wides, and some of them were the 65's we deliberately put out because of all the pressure we were under at the end. What a great game!! The first instant classic of the Atlanta Coed Hurling League."

Celebrations and bragging completed the day at The Grange in Decatur with everyone looking to a bright future for hurling in Atlanta in 2010.

Full Time Score:

The 2009 Connolly’s Cup turned out to be a massive success all around and we would like to thank everyone for showing up and competing on the hottest day of the year: a mere 96 degrees, 100% humidity.  Teams participating this year included Charlotte James Connolly’s (3), Atlanta (3), DC (2), and NY – St. Barnabus (1).   The round robin tournament featured 3 different cups:

1. Men’s Division 1 – A Team
2. Men’s Division 2 – B Team
3. Ladies Division

Charlotte’s A squad took on NY- St. Barnabus to kick off the first match of the day.  Despite the temperature in the early morning, Charlotte went on to win the match by a result of 4-7 to 0-3.  Determined to bounce back, NY – St. Barnabus rebounded against DC in a back & forth match.  Ultimately, NY – St. Barnabus held on to defeat DC by a result of 3-11 to 0-14 with some early second half goals being the difference.  The final match of the division paired Charlotte v. DC.  Charlotte took control from the first ball and never looked back handing DC another loss  and thus retaining the Connolly’s Cup for another season.

In the second division, Atlanta manhandled Charlotte in Game 1 by a result of 4-8 to 1-3.  Frustrated by the lack of ball movement in Game 1, Charlotte bounced back only to come up short in the second game by a result of 2-6 to 2-9.  While the result was not what Team B had hoped for, a lot of their young players got their first real match experience that will hopefully prepare them for the matches ahead leading up to Boston.  Atlanta was able to lock down the first ever B division and is already looking forward to defending the cup in 2010.

In the ladies matches, Charlotte won their first match against Atlanta Clan Na Gael by a result of 5-8 to 1-4, while DC bested Atlanta Na Fianna 5-12 to 3-2.  The final match came down to Charlotte V. DC in what seemed to be like a runaway for Charlotte.  However, some late second half goalsby DC pulled the match within 3 points, yet the ladies of Charlotte were determined to hang on sliding by DC by a final of 4-6 to 3-6.  This was a big win for the ladies of Charlotte bringing home their first ever Connolly’s Cup to the Queen City.
